PITTSBURG, KAN. — Bessie Birkinsha Johnson, 80, Atchison, Kan., died about 5:30 a.m. Saturday at an Atchison nursing home after a short illness.
Her sister, Peggy L. Striegel, Carl Junction, Mo., survives.
Mrs. Johnson was born Jan. 13, 1914, in Crawford County, Kan. She had lived in Pittsburg. She graduated from Cherokee County (Kan.) High School.
She moved in 1952 to Atchison, where she was a clerk and later a credit manager at the J.C. Penney Co. Inc. store.
She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge, Pittsburg, and the First Christian Church, Atchison. She was also a professional tailor and seamstress.
She married Raymond E. Birkinsha on March 31, 1937, in Lamar. He died Nov. 10, 1944.
She married William Nelson Johnson on Aug. 20, 1952, in Lamar. He died April 7, 1979.
Additional survivors include three sons, James R. Birkinsha Sr., Jack E. Birkinsha and Gerald D. Birkinsha Sr., all of Atchison; 11 grand-children;14 great-grandchildren; four great-step-grand-children; and a great-great-step-granddaughter.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Crocker Cemetery, Pittsburg. The Rev. John Muncy will officiate.
Family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, Atchison, and from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday at Brenner Funeral Home, Pittsburg.
Contributions may be made to Cray Senior Manor or the Boy Scouts of America, Kanza District.

BYRON CENTER, Mich. - Jack Eugene Birkinsha, 61, Byron Center, formerly of Atchison, died Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2001.
Mr. Birkinsha was an attorney with the Great American Life Insurance Co., Los Angeles, before retiring in 1989.
Born on Jan. 22, 1940, in Pittsburgh, Kan., he graduated from Atchison (Kan.) High School, Kansas State University and Harvard Law School.
He was married to Linda R. Krueger. They later divorced.
Mr. Birkinsha was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond E. and Bessie.
Surviving: a son, Raymond E.; two brothers, James and Gerald; and four grandchildren.
Memorial service: 2 p.m. Friday, Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. …

Gerald Dean ‘Jerry’ Birkinsha, 69, Atchison, KS, passed away peacefully, Saturday morning, October 27, 2012 at home surrounded by his loving family.
Memorial Services will be 11:00 AM, Thursday, November 1, 2012 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home with Rev. Kassie Smith McKee, Co-Associate Pastor of the Atchison First Christian Church, officiating.
Inurnment of the cremated remains will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery, Atchison.
Family will receive friends on Wednesday evening from 6:30 to 8:00 PM at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions in honor of Jerry are suggested to the First Christian Church or the American Cancer Society and may be left in care of the funeral home.

Gerald Dean Birkinsha was born on October 29, 1942 in Pittsburg, KS, the son of Raymond E. and Bessie L. (Trisler) Birkinsha.
Jerry moved to Atchison in 1954. Following his graduation from Atchison High School,
Jerry served for four years in the US Army just prior to the Vietnam War.
Upon returning home, Jerry worked for Rockwell International, Atchison Casting and Bradken steel foundries in Atchison for forty years as a Quality Control Inspector.
Jerry was a member of the First Christian Church, where he served as Deacon of the church and helped with the church’s Wednesday Bread and Bible class; member of United Steel Workers Union, Local #6943; former Lancaster Lions Club member; and a former Cubmaster and Boy Scout Leader for ten years with Pack#255 and Troop 255 of Atchison. Jerry had also called Bingo at the Atchison Knights of Columbus Hall for many years.
He especially loved his grandchildren and enjoyed watching them play sports. Jerry also enjoyed going to the casino and the times he spent drinking coffee with friends down at the river watching the Amelia Earhart Bridge construction
Jerry and Helen P. Lutz were married on November 19, 1966 at St. Benedict’s Church, Atchison, KS. Helen survives of the home.
Additional survivors include two sons, Gerald D. Birkinsha, Jr and Nelson E. (Karen M.) Birkinsha, both of Atchison; one brother, James R. Birkinsha, Atchison; four grandchildren, Scott Gerald, Dylan Robert, Kevan Anthony, and Courtney Machelle Birkinsha.
Jerry was preceded in death by two sons, Brian and Anthony Birkinsha; his parents, Raymond and Bessie; step-father, Nelson Johnson; and a brother, Jack Eugene Birkinsha.

PITTSBURG, KAN. — Bessie Birkinsha Johnson, 80, Atchison, Kan., died about 5:30 a.m. Saturday at an Atchison nursing home after a short illness.
Her sister, Peggy L. Striegel, Carl Junction, Mo., survives.
Mrs. Johnson was born Jan. 13, 1914, in Crawford County, Kan. She had lived in Pittsburg. She graduated from Cherokee County (Kan.) High School.
She moved in 1952 to Atchison, where she was a clerk and later a credit manager at the J.C. Penney Co. Inc. store.
She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge, Pittsburg, and the First Christian Church, Atchison. She was also a professional tailor and seamstress.
She married Raymond E. Birkinsha on March 31, 1937, in Lamar. He died Nov. 10, 1944.
She married William Nelson Johnson on Aug. 20, 1952, in Lamar. He died April 7, 1979.
Additional survivors include three sons, James R. Birkinsha Sr., Jack E. Birkinsha and Gerald D. Birkinsha Sr., all of Atchison; 11 grand-children;14 great-grandchildren; four great-step-grand-children; and a great-great-step-granddaughter.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Crocker Cemetery, Pittsburg. The Rev. John Muncy will officiate.
Family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, Atchison, and from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday at Brenner Funeral Home, Pittsburg.
Contributions may be made to Cray Senior Manor or the Boy Scouts of America, Kanza District.

BYRON CENTER, Mich. - Jack Eugene Birkinsha, 61, Byron Center, formerly of Atchison, died Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2001.
Mr. Birkinsha was an attorney with the Great American Life Insurance Co., Los Angeles, before retiring in 1989.
Born on Jan. 22, 1940, in Pittsburgh, Kan., he graduated from Atchison (Kan.) High School, Kansas State University and Harvard Law School.
He was married to Linda R. Krueger. They later divorced.
Mr. Birkinsha was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond E. and Bessie.
Surviving: a son, Raymond E.; two brothers, James and Gerald; and four grandchildren.
Memorial service: 2 p.m. Friday, Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. …

Gerald Dean ‘Jerry’ Birkinsha, 69, Atchison, KS, passed away peacefully, Saturday morning, October 27, 2012 at home surrounded by his loving family.
Memorial Services will be 11:00 AM, Thursday, November 1, 2012 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home with Rev. Kassie Smith McKee, Co-Associate Pastor of the Atchison First Christian Church, officiating.
Inurnment of the cremated remains will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery, Atchison.
Family will receive friends on Wednesday evening from 6:30 to 8:00 PM at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions in honor of Jerry are suggested to the First Christian Church or the American Cancer Society and may be left in care of the funeral home.

Gerald Dean Birkinsha was born on October 29, 1942 in Pittsburg, KS, the son of Raymond E. and Bessie L. (Trisler) Birkinsha.
Jerry moved to Atchison in 1954. Following his graduation from Atchison High School,
Jerry served for four years in the US Army just prior to the Vietnam War.
Upon returning home, Jerry worked for Rockwell International, Atchison Casting and Bradken steel foundries in Atchison for forty years as a Quality Control Inspector.
Jerry was a member of the First Christian Church, where he served as Deacon of the church and helped with the church’s Wednesday Bread and Bible class; member of United Steel Workers Union, Local #6943; former Lancaster Lions Club member; and a former Cubmaster and Boy Scout Leader for ten years with Pack#255 and Troop 255 of Atchison. Jerry had also called Bingo at the Atchison Knights of Columbus Hall for many years.
He especially loved his grandchildren and enjoyed watching them play sports. Jerry also enjoyed going to the casino and the times he spent drinking coffee with friends down at the river watching the Amelia Earhart Bridge construction
Jerry and Helen P. Lutz were married on November 19, 1966 at St. Benedict’s Church, Atchison, KS. Helen survives of the home.
Additional survivors include two sons, Gerald D. Birkinsha, Jr and Nelson E. (Karen M.) Birkinsha, both of Atchison; one brother, James R. Birkinsha, Atchison; four grandchildren, Scott Gerald, Dylan Robert, Kevan Anthony, and Courtney Machelle Birkinsha.
Jerry was preceded in death by two sons, Brian and Anthony Birkinsha; his parents, Raymond and Bessie; step-father, Nelson Johnson; and a brother, Jack Eugene Birkinsha.
