James was born at Torfoot, Lanarkshire, Scotland. Lands of Torfoot confirmed to "James Brownlee of Torfoot as eldest son and heir of the said Thomas Brownlee, dated 19 April, 20 May 1773. Lands were given to John Brownlee in Torfoot, his eldest son and heir, 14 July 1803, Will of James Brownlee, #61, Will Book #3, pp 155-156.
