Tasked with protecting American troop transports during the counter invasion of Guadalcanal, in the Solomon Islands, the screening cruisers and destroyers of the U.S. fleet came under attack in the early hours of August 9, 1942.
Struck by more than 85 8-inch shells from Japanese cruisers and several torpedo strikes, Vincennes, along with sister ships Quincy and Astoria were sunk, sending them to the bottom of what forever later would be known as 'Ironbottom Sound.'
