On April 9, 1942, he became a Prisoner of War when Bataan was surrendered to the Japanese. He took part in the Death March from Bataan and was held as a POW at Camp O'Donnell and Cabanatuan.
In late 1942, he was boarded on a Japanese transport for Korea. During the voyage, he became ill and died. His body were taken ashore and cremated. His ashes were sent to Mukden, Manchuria, and held there until the end of the war.
