Although the grave is unmarked, a Mrs. Jacobs is buried here according to an old obituary that was was found on microfilm at the Bartow Historical & Genealogical Library on 8/7/2010. This obituary appeared in the 5/24/1905 edition of the Bartow Courier Informant. The obituary reads:

"Mrs. Jacobs, an aged lady, died a few days ago at the home of her daughter Mrs. Welsh near Homeland. She was about 84 years of age and had been ill for a year or so. She was the mother of Mrs. Conner of this place. The body was buried in Homeland Cemetery."

Searches were conducted for a Mrs. Jacobs on the 1900 census in Polk and neighboring counties, and the only one found in Florida the same approximate age was Nancy Jacobs, who was living with her son William Riley Jacobs, Jr. at that time in DeSoto County, just outside of Avon Park. Searches were also conducted for a Mrs. Conner and Mrs. Welsh on the 1900 census. No Conners are listed in Polk in 1900; several are listed on the 1910 census, but all of them were born either in Pennsylvania or Georgia. However, Mary Conyer, daughter of Nancy Jacobs, appears on both the 1900 and 1910 census in Polk County. No Welshes were found on the 1900 census; 1 Welsh was found on the 1910 census in Hillsborough County, but he was born in New York. There are several Welches on the 1900 and 1910 census in Polk County, and these are all brothers and/or cousins of Sampson Richard Welch, Nancy Jacob's son-in-law. Sampson Richard and Parthenia Jacobs Welch (Nancy's daughter) do not appear on the 1900 census, but are on the 1910 census living in Keysville, Hillsborough County, Florida, just across the Polk County line.

Nancy was not found on the 1910 census, but several of her children and grandchildren were here in Polk and in what is now northern Hardee County and Eastern Hillsborough County.

For these reasons, I believe this Mrs. Jacobs may be Nancy Shelley Jacobs, and that the two daughters listed are Parthenia Welch and Mollie Jacobs Conyer.

Nancy Shelley Jacobs was my great-great-grandmother. We have tried for many years to find out when she died and where she was buried, but until locating this obituary, have found no record of any kind. It may well be that this is not Nancy Shelley Jacobs. I hope that if anyone visiting this memorial has any additional information to either prove or disprove it, please contact me.
