One day at work, August slipped and fell while carrying a large bundle of reeds on his shoulder. The fall resulted in a severe injury to his neck and spinal cord. August died in the Karlsruhe Evangelical Nursing Hospital at 7:30 AM on 3 Aug 1893.
After August's death, his widow Ernestine married Johann Phillip Hess.
