Attached to the Bulgarian 3rd Infantry Battalion, Senior Sgt Vladimir Pashov was killed near Karbala, Iraq, on October 24, 2004.

Relatives, officials and many ordinary people flocked to Sofia's St Nedelya Church to lay homage to Senior Sergeant Vladimir Pashov, Bulgaria's seventh fatality in Iraq.

The victim was part of the country's 480-strong third peacekeeping unit deployed in the city of Karbala. He died after a truck loaded with explosives blew up on the path of his convoy just outside the city, injuring three other soldiers, on Sunday.

Sgt. Pashov was posthumously promoted to the military rank of officer candidate and awarded with the first-grade honorary sign "For Loyal Service under the Colours".
