Jacksonville - Funeral services for James M. Dancy, age 95 years, a resident of this city for over half a century, who died Saturday night in Brevard, N.C., following a fall a few days before, were held Monday afternoon in St. Johns Episcopal Church here, with Rev. Newton Middleton, rector, officiating. Interment was in Evergreen Cemetery.
Mr. Dancy, who was visiting a daughter, Mrs. A. E. Hampton, at the time of his death, was born in Orange Mills near Palatka, where the family residence was known as Buena Vista. He was engaged in civil engineering for many years, having run the first surveyor's line from what is now West Palm Beach to Miami. He lived with the Seminole Indians while at work on that project. Before coming to Jacksonville, he was stationed in the surveyor general's office in Tallahassee, and had done surveying in all part of the state.
Mr. Dancy's father, Col. E. L. Dancy, a graduate of West Point, was a member of the Army Engineering Corps, and had charge of constructing the seawall at St. Augustine.
Survivors include four other daughters, Mrs. Flora Chace, Mrs. Carol DeSausaure and Mrs. Edward Johnson, all of Jacksonville, and Mrs. Thomas S. Bond, Savannah; a sister, Mrs. Porcher L'Engle, also of this city, and a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren. Among other relatives are, Mrs. J. H. Millican of Palatka, and Mrs. Frank Kaiser of Hastings, nieces, and Davis Dancy of Palatka, a nephew.
