There is a lot of controversy over my great-grandmother Myrtle May Troutt's parentage. She was raised by Stephen R. Mabb and his wife Hattie Crowder Mabb. But according to newspaper clippings, as far back as 1908 Myrtle was questioning who her biological parents were and claiming Stephen R. Mabb as her foster father refused to give her the information. Up until the year before she died, Myrtle continued to place ads in the newspaper seeking info on her biological parents. Myrtle's death certificate claims a John Grant and a Myrtle Mabb as her parents, but there are no other documents to prove that info. Her marriage certificate to Fred Troutt lists Stephen Mabb as her father.

So in saying that, I am for at least now connecting my great grandmother to the man who raised her, Stephen R. Mabb. If any information ever comes forth on her real parentage, then I will correct her memorial. ~ Rosemarie Robson
