He was the infant son of Mathew Sinclair and Margaret Shirkey Sinclair

From the Deseret News Vol. XXVII No.16 (MAY 22, 1878) Page 15:

"DIED.--- At Nephi, Juab County, April 2nd (SIC?), 1878, (should be April 22, 1878) JOSEPH MATHEW, son of Mathew and Margaret Sinclair, aged 3 months and 23 days.
Millenial Star, please copy."

(Note: When the article was re-printed in the Millenial Star, the spelling of Mathew was changed to the customary standard spelling with two ts. Most evidence indicates that both father and son's names were spelled with just one t. Also, the Millenial Star version stated that he was three months old)

The dates on the headstone (April 22, 1878 - August 15, 1878) do not match the obituary. The headstone shows his apparent death date as his birth date and then apparently calculated the August 15 death date from that. However, that cannot be correct because the obituary was printed three months earlier in May.
