John Dakin was the son of Glodell Dakin and Carrie Fairclo. When John was two years old, he left Arkansas City, Kansas with his parents and moved to Ashland, Kansas. They settled on the "Dakin ranch" where John grew to manhood. He attended Kansas State College in Manhattan, Kansas for awhile, but soon returned home to assist his father on the ranch. He continued to make his living as a rancher and stockman in the Ashland, Kansas area.

He married Edna Snyder, daughter of William Kester Snyder and Della Amanda Martin, on 27 Mar 1926 at Medicine Lodge, Barber County, Kansas.

After he retired in 1963, John and Edna moved to Denver, Colorado, but returned to Ashland in 1971.

Preceding John in death was one son, John Lindley who died at birth in 1934. Surviving were his wife, Edna and two daughters, Virgina and Annette.

Funeral services were held at the First Presbyterian Church in Ashland on 28 Dec 1971.
