Thirty-nine year old Thomas Brock enlisted in Company A, 173rd New York Infantry on October 30, 1862.

During his service, the regiment participated in action in Louisiana at Port Hudson, the Sabine Pass expedition, the Red River Campaign, and Sheridan's Shenandoah Valley Campaign. After the end of hostilities, the regiment did garrison duty in Savannah until mustering out on October 18, 1865.

Thomas Brock worked as a painter after the war; he and his wife Rosanna had two children, Walter and Frank.
