Hezekiah Banker was born in New York City in 1829. He worked as a wood engraver before enlisting in Company E, 87th New York Infantry on November 9, 1861. He participated in the Peninsula Campaign, the Seven Days battles, and Second Bull Run.

The regiment consolidated with the 40th New York in September, 1862. Hezekiah was discharged at Annapolis on October 31, 1862. Other records claim Private Banker deserted from the company. The regimental roster held at the New York Historical Society claims Banker was "captured and paroled, no dates; no record subsequent to October 31, 1862, at Annapolis."

He died of unknown causes in 1863.
