Funeral services for Mrs. Laura Burton Carr, 87, member of a pioneer middle Tennessee family long active in political activities of the state, will be at 10:00 Saturday by the Rev. Charles J. Hawkins at Finely Dorris and Charlton Funeral Home. The body is at the funeral home.
Prayer services will be held at 2:30 tomorrow at the Whitson Funeral Home, Cookeville, TN. Burial will be in the Cookeville cemetery.
Mrs. Carr, who had been in good health until she was stricken with a heart attack about 3 weeks ago, died
Thursday afternoon in St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville.
Born in Putnam County, she had lived in Nashville since 1918 and was affectionately known to her many younger friends as "Granny Carr". Her home was at Parthenon Ct. Apts. on Long Blvd.
She was a daughter of Alex Burton, farmer and general merchant of Putnam County, who was also postmaster of the county's first post office, located in his store at Perkin. Her mother was the former Miss Elizabeth McKinely, also a Putnam County native. Her husband, the late Sidney Franklin Carr, was Putnam County Registrar in the early 1900's, and served for several years, commencing in 1907, in the office of Secretary of State. He was representative in Putnam County to the Legislature from 1919, and
served in state governmental posts almost continuously afterward until his death in 1931.
Her son, Joe C. Carr of Hampton Ave., Nashville, insurance man, formerly served as Secretary of State.
She was a member of Blakemore Methodist Church.
In addition to her son, she is survived by 3 daughters, Mrs. Alta Campion and Mrs. H. L. Griggs, both of
Nashville, and Mrs. H. G. Maddux of Cookeville; 2 other sons, Shelton Carr and Albert Carr, both of Nashville; a sister, Mrs. Eliza Ditty of Buffalo Valley, TN; 10 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
