William Mayford Lowe, 83, of East Church Street, died Friday morning at Laughlin Memorial Hospital.

He was a member of Towering Oaks Baptist Church.

Mr. Lowe was a longtime employee of Reynolds Engine Shop, and Magnavox, which later became Philips Consumer Electronics Co., and was a retired employee of Greene Valley Developmental Center.

He was a veteran of World War II and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Andrew Johnson Post #1990. He was awarded five bronze stars.

He was one of the founding members of the Greeneville/Greene County Rescue Squad and served with the Rescue Squad for a number of years. At the time of his death, he was still an honorary member.

His family noted that he was a loving and devoted husband, father and "Papaw."

He is survived by his wife of 64 years: Mamie Lee Brank Lowe; his children and their spouses: Steve and Judy Lowe and Janie and Eddie Munsey, all of Greene County, and Teddy and Cheryl Humbert of Lavonia, Ga.; his granddaughters: Shona Parkins, Amanda Lowe, and Whitney Lowe, all of Greene County, and Tina Clemons of Washington County; his grandson: Adam Humbert of Lavonia; a great-grandson: Nick Laughlin of Greeneville; a great-granddaughter: Hannah Clemons of Washington County; two sisters: Grace Britton and Brenda Knight, both of Greene County; and two brothers: Harold Lowe and Elmo Lowe, both of Greene County.

He was preceded in death by a son: Freddy Lowe; his parents: Hubert and Pearl Wampler Lowe; and a sister: Myma Kate Arwood.

The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. today at Rose Hill Funeral Home.

The funeral service will be held at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon in the funeral home chapel. The Rev. James K. Pierce III will officiate.
Interment will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery with VFW Post #1990 conducting military honors at the graveside.
