The History of Bangor Church and Graveyard notes that James Old was born in Wales in 1730, came to America about 1750, and married Margaret Davies, daughter of Gabriel Davies. They had four children. He was a successful iron master, and a member of the Pennsylvania Assembly from 1791-1793.
James died in his 79th year, at Spring Grove.
James Old built a iron forge called Pool Forge. In 1795 he sold several of his tracts of land, including the forge, to his son, Davies Old (Deed U-114). The forge has disappeared but the iron master's mansion and other buildings have survived.
