HENRY DENSMORE
(3rd child of John & Dorcus Densmore)
Henry Densmore, was born March 3, 1822 at Strongsville, Ohio, coming to Michigan in 1830 with the rest of the family when Henry was 8 years of age, locating at Pittsfield in Washtenaw County, here the family live for 9 or 10 years. Henry spending most of his school and young manhood days in this county.
In 1839 he with his brother John, and sisters Sally and Lovisa came to the farm in Ingham County in Ingham Township on Section 28, and set the same in readiness as far as the 4 young people, a yoke of oxen and two good axes could, for the occupancy for the rest of the family the following spring.
June 18, 1844, Henry married Persis Hall and they went to keeping house in and lived at Jackson, Mich. 7 or 8 years as we noticed all of their 3 children were born in Jackson and by reference to the Register of Deeds office of this county. It is disclosed that from 1860 to 1866, Henry bought and sold several different parcels of land in Ingham and Wheatfield Townships in Ingham County. In the early part of 1850 he bought the site where the old Howard School house now stands operating a store and having a post office there. During the Civil War, Henry and Thad owned and conducted a general store in Dansville, selling this store and stock in 1866 to Egbert Rice, the father of Mrs. Ernest Densmore. Mr. Rice continued this business for a quarter of a century and strange to say, after his death Mr. & Mrs. Ernest Densmore owned and operated the same store for a number of years.
Henry Densmore was known as the Sunday School Missionary and with a pair of ponies, for 25 years he traveled over the wilds of northern Michigan, organizing Sunday Schools. It is stated that he traveled nearly 200,000 miles with his Indian Ponies, organizing 405 new Sunday Schools, with 1829 teachers and having 10,816 scholars. He served 20 years as a Sunday School Supt. He was induced to go into this work when a Sunday School Missionary came and organized a Sunday school at the Howard School.
Henry and wife spent 16 winters in the East, mostly in New York City, studying child life and equipping himself for his work. For the last 25 years of his life, his permanent home was in and around Greenville, Mich. He owned a farm near Blanchard and died on this farm Oct. 24, 1894, 72 years of age. Persis, his wife, died Jan. 1, 1899 and both are buried at Greenville, Mich.
Henry was 6' 4" tall, not very heavy built but very active.
Henry and Persis had 3 children: Hiland, Alice and Frank.
