MRS. P.C. SNELL, PIONEER WOMAN OF CITY, IS DEAD
Mrs. Parthenia C. Snell, one of the best known of the early pioneer women of Long Beach, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. G. F. Hirsch, 1721 American avenue, at 8:30 o’clock this morning. Mrs. Snell moved to Long Beach in 1885 with her family and during her 38 years of residence here was been known especially for the care she has given the sick and the generous manner in which she has extended her aid wherever it was needed.
Mrs. Snell was born in North Bridgewater, Mass., on May 2, 1833. She was the oldest of six children and being orphaned at an early age assumed much of the responsibility for her family together with her grandmother. In 1850 she married William S. Snell in Sterling, Mass.
In 1870 Mr. and Mrs. Snell moved to Louis, Iowa and in 1885 came to Long Beach where Mr. Snell died in 1895. Mrs. Snell is survived by a daughter, Mrs. G. F. Hirsch, a son, Frank F. Snell of Hemet, six grandchildren, Steven Snell of San Diego, Arthur Snell of Santa Monica, Edna May Scott of Two Harbors, Minn., Ardis Snell of Fresno, Robert S. Hirsch of Fresno and Long Beach and Mrs. T. D. McFarland of San Pedro and by 11 great grandchildren.
The grandson, Robert Hirsch, arrived from Fresno several days ago and was with his grandmother before her death.
The body is at Holton funeral parlors. Funeral announcements will be made later.
