Gabriel D. Smith, Sr., was born 12 December 1764 in Montgomery County, North Carolina, USA, to John "Little River" Smith. His mother is unknown. He died between 1840 (he is on the 1840 United States Federal Census Record for Carroll County, Georgia, USA) and on or prior to 13 August 1841 (on this date land bought and sold out of estate of the late Gabriel Smith) in Carroll County, Georgia, USA.

There is NO evidence that his middle name was Darius.

Gabriel was a Revolutionary War Soldier who at only 16 years of age volunteered to be a substitute in the North Carolina Militia for his brother Jasper.

Gabriel, a farmer, married Sarah Downs (born ca 1767 and dead before 30 September 1837)in the fall of 1785 (not verified but Ezekiel was born 18 July 1786 so it is probable) in Anson (now Montgomery County), North Carolina, USA. Gabriel and Sarah were Primitive Baptists.

After Sarah's death, Gabriel married Matilda(Chandler) Carter on 30 September 1837 in Carroll County, Georgia, USA.

Gabriel and Sarah are said to be buried in unmarked graves in Old Poplar Springs Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery (Horsley Cemetery) located north of Bowdon in Carroll County, Georgia, USA. That has NEVER been proven however.

After Elizabeth's death, he married Elizabeth Susanna Martin on on 23 May 1828 in Georgia. She died 11 February 1897 Dawson County, Georgia, USA.
3) William Smith born 15 February 1789 Wilkes County, Georgia, USA. Date of death unknown but William Smith's name is listed on his deceased father's 1841 estate sale.
4) Richard Smith born 13 June 1790 Elbert County, Georgia, USA, and died after 1886. He is said to have married Nancy Smith (19 September 1792-19 August 1853)on 10 June 1813.
