John was the third and final husband of Johanna Sophia Eschman following Ernst Steinhauser and Constantin Blandowski. The father of five children with Sophia, he died of bronchitis and was originally buried in Bellefontaine Cemetery. In 1936, the remains of John and Sophia were exhumed, cremated and re-interred in the Oak Grove Cemetery mausoleum of Cora and Edward Melsheimer, their daughter and son-in-law. Their names do not appear on the crypt.
In January, 2014, due to deteriorating conditions at Oak Grove Mausoleum, John's remains were cremated and moved to Valhalla Cemetery. They were reinterred in the Henges family plot.
