Along with her parents and siblings, Johanna immigrated to the US in 1850. About 1858 she married her first husband Ernst Steinhauser and they had one son, Ernst. Ernst died in 1858 from injuries incurred after being thrown from a wagon. On 06 Jun 1859 she married Constantin Blankowski and they had two children, Thekla and Charles. In 1861 Constantin was shot and he is regarded as the first Union officer killed in the Civil War. Five years later on 21 Mar 1864 she married her third husband John Holland and they had four children: Robert, Lillian, John and Cora. Johanna died of myocarditis and was originally buried in Bellefontaine Cemetery. In 1936, the remains of John and Sophia were exhumed, cremated and re-interred in the Oak Grove Cemetery mausoleum of Cora and Edward Melsheimer, their daughter and son-in-law. Their names do not appear on the crypt.

In January, 2014, due to deteriorating conditions at Oak Grove Mausoleum, Sophia's remains were cremated and moved to Valhalla Cemetery. They were reinterred in the Henges family plot.
