Mathilda was the daughter of Wilhelm Eschmann and Frederica Greve. Along with her parents and siblings she immigrated to the US about 1849 and settled in Ohio before moving with the family to Louisville, Kentucky. On 15 Sep 1856 she married Civil War veteran Gustav Nepper and the couple had ten children: William, Gustavus, Robert, Amelia, Julia, Gustave, Harry, Samuel, Edward, and Fred. Gustav committed suicide in 1877 by shooting himself in the head with a revolver. Mathilda never remarried. Her death certificate recorded the cause of death as chronic myocarditis. However, her burial information at Spring Grove Cemetery listed the cause as ureamic poisoning. She was 80.
