Ernst was the son of Wilhelm Eschmann and Frederica Greve. About 1849 he immigrated with his parents and siblings to the United States where they first settled in Washington County, Ohio. During the next decade most of the family moved to Louisville, Kentucky, whereas Ernst relocated to St. Louis, Missouri. On 10 Nov 1858 he married Johanna Meyer and they had three children: Sophia, Otto, and Laura. Ernst was a veteran of the Civil War, serving in the 5th Regiment, US Reserve Corps, Missouri Infantry. He worked in a flour mill and as a bookkeeper. Ernst died of cirrhosis of the liver at the age of 56.
