Julia was the daughter of Wilhelm Eschmann and Frederica Greve. About 1849, along with her parents and siblings, she immigrated to the United States where she settled in Washington, Ohio. By 1860 the family had moved to Louisville, Kentucky. On 15 Jul 1869 she married Friedrich A. Stein and they had five children: Ernest, Alvina, Frieda, Mathilda, and Luther. She was well known in the city as she taught German in the old Underhill and Broadway school. The exact year of Friedrich's death is not known but Julia was a widow for many years. For most of the rest of her life she lived with her sister Augusta. Julia died of senility at the age of 65.
