Roscommon Town - Late Mr Joe Regan
Huge crowds turned out to pay tribute to one of Roscommon town's bestknown publicans, Mr Joe Regan as he was laid to rest this week. The late Joe Regan died on Friday night, May 4th. The local community was united in grief following the death of one of the best known and well loved publicans in Roscommon.
The late Joe was synonymous with the pub trade, owning and operating the successful landmark Regan's public house in the Square, Roscommon for many years. Originally from Fairymount, Castlerea , Joe left Ireland to find work in Liverpool at the young age of 14.
Returning to Ireland many years later, the deceased and his brother Martin ran the popular Regan's of Tara Street in Dublin before he came back to his native County Roscommon in 1973. The deceased established his landmark pub in Roscommon that year and it was originally known as The Parnell House. The late Joe Regan operated the successful business until his retirement in 1997 when his sons Dominic and Eamon (RIP) took over the pub.
The deceased was a hard working man who managed to build up a hugely successful business over the years. He was also a great family man and was a dedicated husband to his wife, Peggy and their eleven children. He also enjoyed farming and kept some cattle near his home in Creevy, Roscommon.
The late Joe was also known as a stalwart member of the local Vintner's Association. The deceased was known for his great wit, his unique sense of humour and quick-witted banter, which won him many friends and admirers in the pub over the years. Indeed it was often said "If he didn't know you on the way in, he knew you on the way out". His keen business sense was carried on by many members of his family as his sons Paul and Noel operated The Bartra House Hotel in Ballina, County Mayo for many years while his son David also ran The Bard pub in Ballina. Regan's pub still remains in the family with the deceased's son Dominic, daughter-in-law, Mary and grandson Shane now running the business. Joe Regan's grandson, Shane is now the third generation of the family at the helm of the business.
His remains were removed from his home in Creevy to the Sacred Heart Church, Roscommon on Sunday evening with burial taking place to St Coman's Cemetery following funeral Mass on Monday afternoon. The deceased is survived by his wife, Peggy (nee Kelly); sons Dominic, Padraic, Gerry, David, Noel, Paul and Seosaimh, daughters, Mary, Pauline, Mairead, extended family members, neighbours and friends. He was pre-deceased by his son Eamon.
