The following obituary appeared in the Rosenberg Herald on October 2, 1936:
"Louis Clay, Sr."
Louis Clay, Sr. died suddenly at the home of his son J. H. Clay of Rosenberg, with whom he had made his home for the past twelve years, Tuesday evening at 6:25, while partaking of his evening meal.
Mr. Clay was born in Hanover, Germany, May 16, 1946, he having reached the ripe old age of 90 years, 4 months and 15 days. He came to America at the age of 2 years, settling in Harris County, where he married and raised his family. He had been a resident of Ft. Bend County for twelve years.
Mr. Clay was a Civil War Veteran. He knew the many hardships experienced by the early settlers of this section of the country, yet he was happy in his experiences and had often expressed the wish to reach the age of 100 years. However, the past few years have been tiresome for him in a way, as his eyes had failed and he could no longer see how to read. Reading was a source of great pleasure to him and he passsed many hours this way. Mr. Clay was a pleasant gentleman and it was good to have known him.
Deceased is survived by two daughters, Mr. W. F. Puls and Mrs. H. A. Bauer, both of Houston; six sons, J. H. Clay of Rosenberg, J. L. Clay, C. C. Clay, J. D. Clay, A. L. Clay, all of Houston and E. R. Clay of San Antonio, one son preceded him in death by several months and his wife by eleven years. He is also survived by eighteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
At the time of going to press complete funeral arrangements had not been made; however, they will be held some time today, Friday, October 2, in Houston, where arrangements are being made by the Westheimer-Voilus Funeral Home. Burial will take place in the family cemetary at Eureka. * * *
