Author, Broadcaster. Born in Ascot, Berkshire, and named after Sheridan Whiteside, the character whom his father was playing on the London stage in "The Man Who Came to Dinner", he was educated at Sizewell Hall in Suffolk and at Merton College, Oxford. His first job was as a reporter and scriptwriter for Independent Television News, but he soon resigned and went on to become a well-known drama critic, both in print and on the BBC., and the author of many theatrical biographies. He is also known as the deviser of several stage shows, notably "Side by Side by Sondheim", "Noel and Gertie" (about Coward and Lawrence), and "Spread a Little Happiness" (about Vivian Ellis).
