The first White people to arrive in Hamilton(there were indigenous Native American peoples in the area) were Elisha and Betsy Payne, who arrived in 1795 with their Baptist brothers and sisters. The motto of the Payne settlement was one of quick and speedy settlement and "progress" aspiring, upon arrival, to "a cabin by spring, a crop by fall." Indeed, by November 16, 1796, the first Baptist church was formed. The Colgate Inn too, was built by Elisha Payne. He designed it so that all of the five streets - Broad, Lebanon, Utica, Hamilton and Madison - would lead travellers straight to him. This explains the peculiar walking patterns and traffic maneuvers we see performed downtown today. Payne named Hamilton after George Washington's secretary, Alexander Hamilton.
