Betty Jean Despain Aagard, 83, of Fountain Green, died peacefully in her sleep at her home on Tuesday, August 31, 2010.

She was born in Salt Lake City on September 4, 1926, to George Eugene and Delphia Rees Despain and grew up in Moroni, Utah. She graduated from Snow College and attended the University of Utah.

Betty married Vance W. Aagard on March 22, 1948 in the Manti L.D.S. Temple. They are the parents of four children: Brad, Ann, Scott and Ellen. As a young woman, Betty worked at Snow College and at the Utah State Department of Education. When her children were born, she became a full-time mother and helped her husband run his sheep ranching operation.

An accomplished pianist, she spent countless hours playing for weddings and funerals, accompanying vocal and instrumental performers, serving as organist of the church choir, and playing for school performances. She instilled a love of and appreciation for music in her children and grandchildren. Mom loved harmony, and on family trips, she would instigate sing-a-longs in the car. She loved nothing more than sitting at the piano with her family surrounding her, singing Broadway tunes.

Betty also loved travel and good conversation, and she was an avid reader of the daily newspaper and kept a world atlas close at hand. She took a lively interest in her children's and grandchildren's lives and gave them unconditional love and support. Mom never missed an "event" if she could help it; we could all count on her for her enthusiastic endorsement of our efforts.

She was a born manager. A list maker and delegator, she never approached tasks in a haphazard way. She put those skills to work in various civic and church duties as well as in the family business.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Vance; her parents; and her sister, Yvonne D. Hale.

She is survived by her children: Brad (Brenda), Ann, Scott (Gay) and Ellen; eight beloved grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two brothers and their wives, Larry and Stella Despain, and Steve and Lynda Despain; a sister-in-law, Kenna A. Rasmussen; and many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of her life will be held on her birthday, Saturday, September 4, 2010 at 11:00 A.M. in the Fountain Green L.D.S. chapel (151 S. 200 W.). Friends may call at the church on Friday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. and also from 9:30 to 10:30 A.M. on Saturday morning prior to the service. Interment will be in the Fountain Green Cemetery.
