Mrs. Elizabeth Kirton Ackman, age 69, of Sandy Springs, GA, passed away Sunday evening, August 29, 2010, in Altus Hospice in Atlanta after a long battle with cancer.

Mrs. Ackman was born in Rome, Georgia on June 15, 1941, daughter of the late Samuel Wilson Kirton and the late Elizabeth Bridges Kirton. She was a graduate of West Rome High School and received her degree from Shorter College. She had a long and distinguished teaching career including 25 years working with and rehabilitating troubled youth, many of whom continued to look to her for guidance in their adult lives. She was a communicant of St. Jude's Catholic Church.

After retirement, she turned to her artistic side and along with her husband, Anthonio Ackman, established Rimba Raya Jewels. She enjoyed designing and hand making one-of-a-kind pieces of jewelry which she sold at artist markets and over the internet. Trips with her husband to Indonesia and Brazil sparked an interest and desire to help save the Rain Forests and work toward a better environment world-wide, which she did through her blog and contributions from proceeds of her jewelry sales.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her uncle, Myron Kirton, cousins, Kenneth Kirton, Stratton Kirton, and Anna Wayne Lott, as well as other cousins and her extended Indonesian family.

Graveside and interment services will be held on Wednesday, September 1, 2010, at 2 pm at the graveside in Pisgah Cemetery. Deacon Antonius Pancha Anugerah will officiate. Those wishing to attend the services are as to assemble at Pisgah Cemetery on Wednesday at 1:45 pm.
