As a senior vice president at Euro Brokers, Keiichiro Takahashi had the résumé of a high-flying businessman: lots of travel, lots of responsibility, an office in the World Trade Center. But in reality, he was most comfortable as a homebody who loved the simple life and exuded low-key stability.

Mr. Takahashi enjoyed tending to his backyard garden of flowers, tomatoes, and Japanese herbs and vegetables. He was such the quintessence of domestic stability and equilibrium, in fact, that after 28 years of marriage, his wife said that she had never seen her husband raise his voice. He was, however, getting excited about something else, in a few years, after his daughter graduated from college, he was probably going to retire, and enjoy his home life full-time.
