Former Grants Pass resident Helen Louise Wertz Hopson, 84, of Phoenix, OR, died Monday, December 8, 2008 at Arbor Place Senior Community in Medford.
Helen was born May 16, 1924, in Grants Pass, OR, to James Garfield Wertz and Lydia Griffin Wertz. Her mother was the last of the children born to the pioneer family of William Marion Griffin and MaryAnn Hamlin. She was very proud of her lineage and loved to reminisce about the history of her family in the Rogue Valley.
She met Troy Dee Hopson while he was stationed at Camp White during WW II. They married on January 13, 1946, in Grants Pass. He was the love of her life and preceded her in death in June of this year. They spent many years traveling while Troy was in the military and then continued to travel during a long retirement. She loved to tell stories of those travels. She also loved to dance and was always up for a trip to town to shop and have lunch.
Survivors include her daughter, Dee Louise Collison, of Jacksonville, OR; granddaughter, Laurie Marie Reid and great grandson, Dexter B. Reid III, of Ashland, OR; niece, MaryAnn Dillon, of Yreka, CA; great nephew, James Dillon, great nieces Dana Dillon, Laurie Walker and Kathy Kitchel, several great great nieces and nephews and many, many friends.
Helen will be buried with her husband at Eagle Point National Cemetery. A memorial will be scheduled in the Spring.
