REXFORD - Jack B. Parrish, 66, of Rexford, died of kidney failure, Wednesday, January 3, at Kalispell Regional Hospital.
He was born May 3, 1923, to Otis and Maggie Parrish in Martin, Tennessee, where he graduated from Martin High School in 1941.
During World War II, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps and served in Europe as a B-24 radio gunnery sergeant. He flew on more than 50 missions and at one time was missing in action for several months after his plane was shot down over Yugoslavia.
In the military, Mr. Parrish received the Silver Star, Purple Heart and Distinguished Flying Cross with One Oak Leaf Cluster.
After his overseas duty, Mr. Parrish returned to Tennessee and on March 8, 1945, married Martha Higgs in Martin.
The couple moved to Missoula, where he earned a bachelor's degree in forestry, with an emphasis in range and wildlife management.
Mr. Parrish was employed by J. Neils Lumber Co. of Libby, which later became St. Regis Lumber Co.
In 1980, he retired as superintendent of the Rexford logging camp.
He also served as the only elected mayor of Rexford and during construction of Libby Dam, Mr. Parrish helped select the current location of Rexford. The community's previous site was flooded after the dam was completed.
In 1972, he was given the annual President's Award by the Tobacco Valley Improvement Association. He also served on the Lincoln County High School Board and various other local school boards.
Mr. Parrish was a member of the Society of American Foresters and was active in the Druid Society at the University of Montana.
He was an avid outdoorsman and conservationist.
Survivors include his wife, Rexford; three daughters, Julianne Price, Hood River, Oregon; Tara Parrish, Missoula; and Jana Erb, Kalispell; four sons, Scott, Rexford; Eric, Eureka; Brad, Libby; and Michael, Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri; two sisters, Joy Wootton, Athens, Georgia, and Edith Barnes Abell, Vermillion, South Dakota; a brother, William O., Columbiana, Alabama; 13 grandchildren and several other relatives.
Visitation will be 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday at Weatherford Funeral Home in Kalispell. Private family services will take place at a later date at Weatherford Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Paul Taylor officiating.
Memorial services will be 4 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church of Eureka with the Rev. James A. Rogers officiating. A reception will follow at the Rexford Community Hall.
The family suggests memorials to the Forestry Scholarship Fund for the University of Montana, c/o First National Bank of Eureka, 222 Dewey Ave., Eureka 59917.
