Tom was a cook with the 347th Infantry, 87th Division, World War I. He was the father of Art Arfons, famed race car driver from Akron and owner/designer/driver of the famous "Green Monster".

Tom Arfons and Bessie Marie Arfons were the parents of Art and Gresola (Lou) Arfons.
Walter and Dale Arfons were/are half-brothers of Art and Lou, from a first marriage of Bessie's.
Tom raised all four children as his own.
NOTE: Tom and Bessie's marriage record from Logan County, Ohio lists Tom's parents as "Charley and Ethel". This is incorrect, and was probably provided by Bessie as a joke. Tom's mother was named "Thomae", which was what Tom gave as a middle name to his daughter, Gresola Thomae Arfons. Tom's father's name is not known.
