Civil War Union Brigadier General. He was a prominent Indiana farmer, politician and lawman, when appointed Colonel in command of the 19th Indiana Infantry at the start of the Civil War. He participated at the battle of the Second Manassas and was promoted Brigadier General in October 1862. In November 1862, Meredith received command of the "Iron Brigade" made up of two Indiana, one Michigan, and three Wisconsin regiments. He led the brigade at Fredericksburg, Chancellorville and was wounded in the Battle of Gettysburg, July 1863. In early 1864, he was sent to command a garrison at Cairo, Illinois and in September 1864, he was transferred to Paducah, Kentucky where he remained until the war ended. For meritorious service, he was brevetted Major General of Volunteers in August 1865. After the war, he served as Surveyor General of the Montana Territory, 1867 to 1869.
