Eliakim Sherrill was born February 16, 1813 in New York. He married Emily Eldridge, a daughter of Judge Eldridge of Madison County. He then served as a member of the 30th United States Congress, holding office from 1847 to 1849. During the Civil War, he served as colonel and commander of the 126th New York Volunteer Infantry. He was mortally wounded while repelling Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg on July 3, 1864, dying the following day. The regimental monument on Cemetery Ridge marks the spot where he fell.
