Major League Baseball Umpire. As an umpire in major league baseball, he earned the respect of peers and players. He was known for his growling, booming calls, clear and decisive hand signals, knowledge of the rules, accuracy calling balls and strikes, unceasing hussle, and a real knack for anticipating and resolving potentially tough situations. He officiated ball games for five decades. When he finally reached the majors at the age of 25, he was one of the youngest umpires. He worked 27 full seasons in the major leagues. The Baseball Hall of Fame welcomed him in 1989.
