Son of Markus and Margaritha (Martin) Benz. In 1837 he left Germany with an "Auswanderungs Gesuche" dated effective 26 Apr 1837 in Greater Baden and stamped by Hüfingen Bezirksamt, issued at Bachheim 25 Apr 1837.

On 14 July 1837, he arrived in New York on the "Albany" under Capt. J. Johnston, out of Le Havre. By 1840, he lived in Canal Winchester, Fairfield County, Ohio, where all his children were born.

About 1840, Joseph married Catherine Thomas. They had three children, Catherine, Joseph and Elizabeth, before her death around 1860. Joseph was a stonemason.
