Kirk was the oldest child of James N. Bell (1901-1947) and Irene Williams (1908-1984). After the death of his father he took over the family orange groves, tending them before school, along with any other jobs he could find to help support the family. After high school, he joined the Navy. On August 21 of 1954, he married Dorothy Marie Kearns, with whom he had three children, and 40 years of wonderful marriage. He worked as a butcher, grocer, grocery manager, and maintainance supervisor. He loved to work around the house, and always had projects he was doing. He was a master gardener, and could grow anything. In 1984, he moved to Las Vegas to be nearer his grandchildren. He died peacefully on Oct. 22, 1994.
