Mary was born in Buffalo, Erie Co., New York. She was a daughter of Benjamin P. and Lorena Walker Van Camp,both born in the Empire State. Her father was a shoemaker and in 1836 moved to Lucas county, Ohio. The following year, he located the family on a farm in Troy township, near Lemoyne. The family consisted of nine children: DeWitt (who died in Lemoyne in 1886), Hannah (Utley) (who died in 1884), Mary (wife of Joshua V. Smith), Cornelius (of Bowling Green), Harriet (Reddick) (who died in Peru, Indiana in 1857), Henry (Decatur, Michigan), Sarah (Jolly)(Bowling Green), Benjamin Franklin (Bowling Green),and Esther (died 1879). Mary married Joshua on February 22, 1842 in Erie, Monroe County, Michigan. They had seven children: Corwin (who died of cholera in 1854 at the age of twelve), Abraham V. (who joined the 21st OVI, was incarcerated at Andersonville, Libby, Belle Isle, and Florence prisons, and lost an arm from scurvy), Charles (Hartford, Michigan), Joshua B. (Lucas County), Huldah (m. Joseph Philes), Millard Fillmore (Marion, Michigan), and Walter H. (Wood County).
