Benjamin was the son of John Butterfield and Naomi Stevens of Goffstown, New Hampshire. He was married first in Goffstown on 20 December 1804 to Dolly BARRON, the daughter of Col. William Barron and Rebecca Fassett. He was married second in 1827 to Betsey JONES of New Boston. Benjamin shares a marker with his first wife in Hillside Cemetery, Grasmere (Goffstown), NH.
