John was the son of Michael Joseph and Catherine Black McSorley. He was born and and spent his early years in Canada. He relocated to Ogdensburg in 1923 at the age of 16 and graduated from Ogdensburg Free Academy.
John was twice married. His first marriage which ended in divorce was to Lillus Frateschi. He then married Grace Rohrmoser on July 21, 1967.
Early in his life he sailed with his brother, Capt. Ernest McSorley, on the Joseph H. Frantz ship. His brother, who was an Ogdensburg resident, was also the Captain of the Edmund Fitzgerald who drowned along with his crew when the ship sank in Lake Superior on Nov 10, 1975.
John worked for Agway Petroleum Products in Heuvelton before retiring in 1972.
He was survived by his second wife, a son and daughter, five stepsons, two step daughters, and two grandchildren.
