Civil War Union Brigadier General. Prior to the Civil War, he served as the First Assistant Postmaster General and was one of the most brilliant political editorial writers. In 1861, he raised the 1st Iowa Cavalry, was appointed Colonel and was promoted Brigadier General in 1862, with a command in the army under General Samuel R. Curtis, in Missouri. For the remainer of the war, he commanded the Missouri State Militia and was brevetted Major General of US Volunteers in March 1865. He was detailed to the military commission that convicted at trial the captured Confederate spy and guerrilla John Yates Beall in February 1865. In 1866, he was elected to the Iowa State Senate and was appointed Minister to Guatemala by the President Andrew Johnson in 1869.
