John was the son of Andrew Johnson / Johnston and Mary "Polly" Williams Barker Johnson Baker

John's father Andrew died when he was only four years old in 1832, and his mother died 10 years later in 1842. He and his brother Samuel (1830-1910) inherited their father's land in Rochester Township and took ownership about 1849 when John came of age. They developed the land and added a lot of property to their well-known and very successful farming enterprise.

John, born Oct 23 1828 in Sangamon county married March 1 1849 to Phoebe E. Bell. They had five living children:

1. Isaiah B, born May 9, 1851, married April 27 1871 to Annie Lovelace. They have one child Elizabeth, and live two and one-half miles south of Rochester.
2. Laura J. born Feb 14 1854, married Dec 30 1869 to Henry R. Hedrick. They have two children, and live two miles west of Clarksville,
3. Robert Sumner died, aged four years
4. John A. born Mar 1 1861,
5. Minnie S. born Sept 17, 1866.[

The two latter live with their father.

Mrs. Phoebe E. Johnson died Feb 17 1871 and John Johnson married June 13, 1873 to Theresa Taff, who was born Oct 21, 1846 near Mechanicsburg. They reside two miles south of Rochester.

John and Theresa had six children:

Johnson--- The funeral of John Johnson was held at 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon at his residence three miles south of Rochester. Rev. F. M. Rogers pastor of the West Side Christian church of this city officiating and the interment was made in the family lot in Mottarville Cemetery.

The funeral was one of the largest ever held in this section of the country--over one thousand friends of the deceased being in attendance. The floral offerings were many and very beautiful.

A quarter composed of Mrs. Esther DeLay, Mrs, Mary Poffenbarger, T. B. Everhard, and Edward Lakin sang "Lead Kindly Light," "The Vacant Chair" and "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere."

The pall bearers were T. C. Smith, Charles J Olcott, H. D. Parker, Ralph Twist, Ira Twist, and Dr. J. M. Bell all of Rochester as were also the members of the choir.
