Elias was the son of Richard E. Barker and Mary "Polly" Williams Barker. His father left four months after he was born, in February of 1825, to conduct "business" in an unspecified southern illinois county. His mother acquired a divorce from Richard, assuming abandonment, in October of 1827 and married Andrew Johnston / Johnson in November of 1827. He was raised with their sons John and Samuel until Andrew's death in Oct of 1832. Mary had another son Andrew Jr after Andrew Senior's death in 1833. She married Greenbury Baker in 1834. Presumably Elias lived with the Baker's until about the time of his mother's death in 1842 as he would have been 18.
Elias married Dorothea Ann Ballaner Jul 20 1848. He was married by his Uncle Reverend Samuel Williams, whom also educated him in school. Dorothea's maiden name is given as Bound in some sources. They had a daughter Margaret S who died Jan 17 1868 at age 16 and is buried next to Elias with her infant son.
Their other children were: Susan Jane Barker Estell, Mary, Judith Florence Barker Martin, Conelia Caroline Barker Richards, Louise Barker Radcliff, George Isaiah Biant Barker, Lilith Barker, Lillie Barker Pape.
