Elvin Bernstein, 93, passed away Friday, Sept. 24, 2010. Funeral: 3 p.m. Sunday in the Kornbleet Memorial Chapel at Ahavath Sholom Cemetery, 411 N. University Drive. Rabbi Ralph Mecklenberger will officiate. Following committal prayers, Elvin will be laid to rest with his wife, Rose, in Ahavath Sholom Cemetery. Casket bearers will be Matthew Bernstein, Steve Politziner, Spencer Levy, Robert Chicotsky and Lon Werner. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to Congregation Ahavath Sholom, Jewish Family Service or the charity of your choice. Elvin, the son of David and Esther Bolton Bernstein, was born Feb. 16, 1917, in Chicago, Ill. He attended the University of Chicago where he earned both his undergraduate and law degrees. As an attorney when World War II broke out, he entered the army as a lieutenant and was stationed at Fort Wolters in Mineral Wells. He continued his military service and met the love of his life, Rose Karasic of Fort Worth. Elvin and Rose were married and soon transferred to Newfoundland where they stayed until returning to Fort Worth to make their home and raise a family. Elvin worked for the city of Dallas as a criminal prosecutor. A career change to the metals business led him to open a successful family-owned business, Lone Star Metals Company, in 1958. Elvin worked every day from 1958 until his retirement that did not occur until well into his 80s. He was active in many civic and charitable organizations, including the Texas Bar Association, Tarrant County Bar Association, the Jewish Federation of Fort Worth and Tarrant County, and was a longtime member of both Congregation Ahavath Sholom and Beth-El Congregation. Elvin's main focus throughout his entire life was his devotion to his wife, his children and their families. He took special joy in his role as "Grand" to his beloved grandchildren. He was also adored by all who knew him, especially his employees. Elvin was always known to be a kind, caring and loving person who was often sought out for his wisdom and insightfulness. He was known for being a gentleman, but he was truly a "gentle man" in the best since of the word. He will be missed by everyone who knew him. Rose and Elvin had a devoted relationship to each other and were married nearly 60 years until Elvin lost his soulmate nine years ago. The family wishes to give a special thanks to caregivers, Tracy Powell, Janet Taylor and Jackie Williams, for their perpetual love and care. Survivors: He is survived by his children, Cheryl and Richard Kress of Baltimore and Rhoda and Howard Bernstein of Fort Worth; grandchildren, Kerry and Spencer Levy of Baltimore, Stacy and Steve Politziner of Palm Beach Gardens, Matthew Bernstein of Denver, Emily Bernstein of Chicago; four great-grandchildren.
