Tombstone says:
Levi Helmer
Cop. Co. D 121st NY Vol. Inf.

Born 23 August 1838 in Herkimer County, New York

on August 12, 1862 he enlisted at Frankfort, Herkimer County, New York into the
121st New York Volunteer Infantry, which was also known as "Upton's Regulars."
He received a $50 bounty from Herkimer County. Mustered in on 23 August at Camp
Schuyler as a private in Capt. John D. Fish's Co. D.

Saw action in the Antietam campaign and the December 1862 Fredericksburg,
Virginia fight. The 121st, a regiment of the 6th Corp, was forced to retreat
across the Rappahannock River from Fredericksburg, where they went into winter
camp at White Oak Church. He participated in the now famous "Burnside Mud
March."

On May 3rd the 6th Corp was again ordered across the Rappahannock to make an
attempt to link up with General Hooker, who was in a heavy fight at

3 May 1863 they were surprised by the Rebel forces at Salem Church, where they
suffered heavy loses. They were again forced to make a retreat. It was on this
retreat on 4 May that he was captured and taken to Belle Isle Prison in
Richmond. He was eventually exchanged and was back with his company on 29
September 1862. He was promoted corporal on 15 May 1865. Mustered out with the
regiment on 25 June 1865 at Hall's Hill, Virginia near Alexandria.
