Rachel Grigsby McChesney was named after her maternal grandmother Rachel Grigsby (Mrs. Alexander McNutt). She married William McClung Crawford on 19 April 1858 at Woodlawn in Rockbridge County, Virginia.

On the 1870 District 2, Augusta Co., Virginia census, I found physician William M Crawford, 36 (abt 1834), other Crawfords: RACHEL M, 35; Fannie M, 11; Milber L, 8; Roberta, 4; James, 1, all Virginia born.

On the 1880 Mount Sidney, Augusta Co., Virginia census, I found physician Wm Cranlord (sic), 46; other Cranlords: wife RACHEL, 45; daughters or sons: Fannie M, 21; Wilber, 16; Robert M, 14; James, 11; Sallie E, 8; Frank H, 6; Ernest B, 4 and Edgar, 9/12, born in Augusta, all Virginia born.

On the 1900 Middle River, Augusta Co., Virginia census, I found widow Rachel M Crawford, 54, born Aug 1834, had 9 kids, 8 living; Crawford daughters or sons: Bertie, 33, Jun 1866; physician Frank H, 25, Oct 1874; confectionary _?_, James A, 30, Jul 1869 and servant Eva Garrison, 17, Jul 1872, all VIrginia born.

Mrs. Wm Crawford is visiting relatives in Rockingham county per the 10 Apr 1901 Lexington Gazette.

"Mrs Rachel Crawford Died at Mt.. Sidney. Mrs. Rachel Crawford, widow of Dr. Wm. M. Crawford, died Tueaday night at her home at Mt. Sidney in Augusta county. Mrs. Crawford was 65 years of age and was born and raised near Brownsburg. She was a daughter of James McChesney and Frances McNutt McChesney, his wife. Her sister, Mrs. William B. Moffett, died at the old home place a few weeks ago. She is survived by eight children, William Crawford of Dallas, Tex., Mrs. Samuel H.McCue of Charlottesville, Mrs. Sallie Griggs of Georgia, James Crawford, Dr. F. H. Crawford and Ernest Crawford of Mt. Sidney, and Edgar M. Crawford of Covington. The interment will be made at the Old Stone church near Ft. Defiance tomorrow morning." DEATH OF MRS. RACHEL CRAWFORD. Passed Away at Her Home at Mt. Sidney Tuesday Might. Mrs Rachel Crawford, widow of the late Dr. Wm. M. Crawford of Mt. Sidney, died shortiy after midnight Tuesday night, aged 65 years. Dr, Crawford died some five or six years ago. The funerai will take place Friday at 11 o'clock at the Oid Stone church at Ft. Defiance, of which she had been a consistent member the greater part of her life. Mrs. Crawford is survived by eight children, five sons and three daughters. They are Wiitiam Crawford of Dallas, Texas, Mrs. Samuel H. McCue of Charlottesviiie, Mrs. Sallie Griggs of Georgia, James and Dr. F. H. Crawford of Mt. Sidney, Ernest Crawford, a University student, and Edgar M. Crawford of Covington. She was the daughter of the late James and Frances McChesney of Brownsburg." The will of Rachel M. Crawford was admitted to probate with E. B. Crawford as administrator. 28 Jun 1901 Staunton Spectator and Vindicator.
