BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION:

William Shea, the patriarch of a large band of San Francisco Sheas, was born in County Cork, Ireland on December 3, 1847 to Patrick Shea and Bess (Moloney) Shea. He was baptized on December 19, 1847, Roman Catholic.

In about 1869, he arrived in San Francisco and is found working as a "helper in a stable" in the 1870 census. In 1880 his occupation is listed as "laborer" in the census records, but Langley's City Directory for 1880 listed him as stable keeper for the City RR Stable. In 1900 he is listed as "stable sweeper" once again. It is possible he kept the same job for 30 years.

Shortly after his arrival, he married Katharine Ready, who was also from Ireland. We do not know if he met her in Ireland, on the ship coming over, or in San Francisco. More research is needed on that score. By June of 1871 they had the first of 8 children born to the couple. Their descendants went on to become San Francisco firemen (a daunting job), some worked on the ships, and others were in the building trades.

Their children were:

William J. Shea, Jr., Jun 1871
John David Shea, abt 1878
George Shea, abt 1879
Eliza J. Shea, Feb 1880
Katharine "Katie" Shea, Dec 1880
Edward Joseph Shea, 31 Jan 1882
Frank Thomas Shea, 12 Jul 1886

All of the children were born in San Francisco. Many of their descendants still live in the general vicinity, either in San Francisco or San Mateo Counties.
