James mustered in to the Indiana Volunteer Infantry, 1st Regiment, Company C (as a sergeant) on 20 June 1846 at New Albany, Indiana. He was mustered out on 17 Dec 1846 in New Orleans on a surgeon's certificate. It should be noted that the date represents the day the ship docked in New Orleans. James had died during the ship's passage and was buried at sea.
